After reading House By Mouse by George Mendoza, scholars imagined and drew their own fantasy houses complete with all the little details that would make them feel at home.
First graders touched on many important Elements & Principles of Art as well as art vocabulary, skills and techniques in this challenging, fun and creative lesson. Scholars learned about texture, collage, relief sculpture and 3D art. They used found materials to bring balance, harmony and rhythm to their 3D designs. They told stories about their art, worked as teams and explored and created together. They created art that was accessible through not only sight, but also touch. Sculptures were completed with a light coat of silver paint to increase the harmony among them. Kindergarteners created "action" self-portraits by drawing and painting themselves in active poses with realistically moving body parts instead of "stick people". Next they learned about mixing the secondary colors from he primary colors by illustrating the book Mouse Paint by Ellen Stoll Walsh. After learning about how Viking, Greek and Roman mythology has influenced our modern superheroes, scholars created an idea for their own unique and original superhero. They drew their superhero and wrote down all of their ideas before they began the next step. They created their 3D sculpture in the round using modeling clay and completed it with tempera paint. Second graders learned about Vincent Van Gogh, Impressionism and his famous painting "Starry Night". They worked in the style of the impressionists and Van Gogh - using small strokes to give the painting a feeling of movement, life and emotion. A Cray Pas and watercolor resist technique was used. |
